Douglas County Commissioner Henry Mitchell III Recognized for Academic Achievement in Lifelong Learning Academy
ACCG awards education certificates to county officials
ATLANTA, GA. (October 13, 2022)-ACCG, Georgia’s County Association, recently awarded county officials with certificates for completing requirements in the Lifelong Learning Academy. Commissioner Henry Mitchell III was honored for completing the County Operations & Management and Intergovernmental Relations specialty track requirements in the Lifelong Learning Academy.
ACCG and the Carl Vinson Institute of Government at the University of Georgia have collaborated for over two decades to provide county officials with supplemental training and educational tools in the Lifelong Learning Academy. With abundant courses to choose from, every county official has a tailor-made learning experience that allows them to excel in specific areas of expertise.
“County officials are faced with many challenges and ever-evolving circumstances under which they must govern Georgia’s local communities,” said Dave Wills, ACCG’s Executive Director. “The Lifelong Learning Academy was created to help them navigate those challenges. I commend county leaders such as Commissioner Mitchell who take full advantage of educational opportunities to further their knowledge on how to serve their communities better.”
The Lifelong Learning Academy was created with input from county commissioners who identified courses based on the issues and decision-making challenges regularly faced by county officials. To ensure the course requirements and curriculum remain relevant and engaging, the ACCG Lifelong Learning Committee – comprised of county commissioners and staff from both ACCG and the Carl Vinson Institute of Government at the University of Georgia – meets regularly to review and adjust accordingly. Through this collaborative approach, the Lifelong Learning Academy has successfully equipped county officials with the necessary skills to meet the needs of their constituents.
Commissioner Henry Mitchell III currently represents District 1 in Douglas County, where he is Chairman of the Parks and Recreation Oversight, Programming, Residential Development, and Service Delivery Strategy Committees. He previously served as Mayor Pro Tem (Vice Mayor) of the City of Douglasville, where he was tasked with the responsibilities of Chairman of the Finance, Information Technology, and Personnel/Organizational Committees.
Commissioner Mitchell holds a Degree in Business Administration, is Federal Communications Commission licensed in radio and television broadcasting and is a Georgia Licensed Realtor. He is the founder and Chairman of the Northside Community Initiative, the annual Multi-cultural Enrichment Back-to-School Festival, Communications Chairman of the United Negro College Fund, and Assistant Coach of the Winston Raiders 150-pound Football Team. After high school, Commissioner Mitchell enlisted in the United States Army, where he served his military time at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii. After completing his tour of duty with the Wolfhounds, he later received an Honorable Discharge from the Armed Forces.
